It's been 5 years, eh?

11:49AM Saturday the 30th of August, 2008
The last 5 years have gone by really fast. Looking back, I really can't believe that it actually has been that long. I mean, it does seem like only yesterday I opened the doors to this website at 6PM Mountain Time (USA / Canada), only yesterday that we had barely more than a few hundred members, and only yesterday that I first discovered Naruto. But, it has not been only one day, in fact it has been a full 1827 days, more than 48,372 hours in our lives that have gone by. It would be hard for me to look back and say that I'm not proud of what this website has accomplished, so I will just come out and say it, I am quite proud of what NarutoFan.com has become in those 5 years. Of course there are some things I wish I hadn't said, some things I wish I hadn't done, and some things I wish I had done... but all of that just adds to the experience. I have grown a lot as a person in the last 5 years from when I first started this website as a young naive kid. And through the 5 years I have experienced a LOT of things, and overcome a fair bit of things to still be here today.
Through this website I have managed to make a lot of friends, some really great friends who I have come to meet in person, some really great people who I still intend to meet, and many hundreds of nice people whom I have exchanged messages with over the years. The experiences that I have had because of this website, and with the people who have visted this website now and in the past, are something that I will always look back fondly upon. When it comes down to it, what exists here... doesn't really exist at all. It is all just on some computer hard drive in some anonymous datacenter many thousands of miles away, and it could all be gone, just as easily as it came. That is the internet, and that is why I have learned over the last year to really appreciate everything a lot more than I have in the past. Now, I know, the passion I had for this may not be as evident as it was in the beginning, but I am most definitely even MORE passionate than I was in the beginning. You just run out of things to say in the course of 5 years, and through the many thousands of posts I have made, but my dedication and desire for excellence has not ceased, and will not cease for as long as we are around.
Now that we are entering our 6th year, something that really is quite a remarkable feat on the internet in the big scheme of things, we will continue on as we have in the past, and we intend to be around for as long as we can, for as long as you want me to be, for years in to the future. We have some exciting things in the works for the coming weeks, and months, and we hope you'll be around to see them. So, I guess what I really just wanted to say was... thanks for coming by. And a big special thank you to all of the great people who have been moderators and administrators over the years, your service is greatly appreciated, unfortunately we don't offer medical insurance for that psych ward you'll end up in. We have really appreciated all the support that many thousands of you have offered in the past, and we look forward to the future! See you next year (well, actually, hopefully next week... up to you!)

August 29th 2004 - August 29th 2006 In Review

6:05PM Tuesday the 26th of August, 2008
As I told you yesterday, we will be celebrating the 5th anniversary of the opening of NarutoFan.com this Friday, on the 29th of August. Just as something fun to do, I thought that I would take a look back at all that has happened in those 5 years, with the website, with the series, with me, with you, with everything. Yesterday I only looked back at the first year, and the very beginning, but today I think I will look back at the years spanning August 29th 2004 - August 29th 2006. A lot happened in those two years, but I'm going to try to keep it short, because my ramblings really are not that interesting... and shouldn't take you longer to read than a chapter of Naruto! To go along with these posts, I have also found and dusted off our old layouts (the images of which you can click on to get a better view), to show how our look has progressed over time.
Before I do go a little futher though, I just wanted to touch on the fact that NarutoFan.com would not still be here today if it were not for the huge support that all of our members have given us through the years. When we first opened, NarutoFan.com ran on about a 100MB shared hosting plan at a very small less than World-class datacentre. As we have grown, we have come to what we are now, with 13 dedicated load balancing servers running the innerworkings of this website, to keep our uptime as high as possible. Add that to two full private racks running all of our media sections, it is a big operation. You guys have been there for us since the very beginning with contributions of $5 or so, and we really, really, have appreciated it.
Of course, we do not take donations any more as was the norm for nearly all websites, but you do still find other ways to keep us supported! To thank our most loyal and longtime serving members, the animePLUS! fairy has been randomly giving out free 5 month memberships, and 5x the bandwidth to already existing PLUS! members. Some of our biggest and best commentors who spend a great deal of their time here, and are truly valuable members of our community, were among the first to be rewarded, and over the next few days, more and more will find out their account has been upgraded.
The year 2004 saw the emergence of one of the biggest forces, and one of the most valuable assets to any Naruto fan. Beginning with the 105th episode the group known as "Dattebayo" was formed, and since then, promptly every week, we have been receiving the Naruto anime, completely subtitled in to English via those fancy subtitles. The other groups would come to disappear, effectively passing on the torch, but even now all Naruto fans can look back and thank the likes of Toriyama World, and ANBU-Aone for being the pioneers of the series and bringing it to everybodies attention first. Up until August 29th, 2006 we had seen 198 episodes from the anime, and 320 chapters from the Japanese Naruto manga series, already moving in to Naruto: Shippuuden with the release of Chapter 245.
Several big milestones happened in the course of those two years. First and foremost, the Naruto anime was officially licensed by ShoPro Entertainment, later found out to be VIZ Media, on February 15th, 2005. This marked the beginning of a new era for Naruto, as finally those outside of Japan would really get to experience the full impact of the series. With the first, and EXTREMELY highly anticipated first episodes airing in a one hour special on Cartoon Network on September 10th 2005, the popularity of Naruto was set to explode, and so it has, with the release of a plethora of videogames, toys, and just about anything else you can think of. Two more Naruto movies would make their way to the theaters, and 17 highly (and some not so highly) rated games were released. As for us, we changed our look a couple of times, and each time you guys threatened to hunt me down, until of course, we got rid of the lovely orange layout that never did seem to catch on! Yes, your passion has always been remarkable.
August 29th 2003 - August 29th 2004 In Review

6:37PM Monday the 25th of August, 2008
On August 29th we will be celebrating the anniversary of this here website. It will be 5 years to the day that I launched this website as a young naive teenager wanting to make the "bestest anime site ever!", just a little over a month from the time that I first discovered Naruto and decided I wanted to make a place where people could gather to see, talk about, and experience all that it has to offer. A lot has changed in the last 5 years, with the website, with me, with Naruto, with you guys, but it certainly has been a lot of fun. I thought it would be a pretty cool idea to take a look back over the next few days at all the big things that have happened in each of the years leading up to now, 2008.
The first anime episode release that we covered here was way back on September 3rd, 2003 (yeah, Naruto used to air on a Wednesday way back then) with the release of the 48th episode from the Naruto series entitled: Gaara Crushed!! It's Youth Power! And Explosion! - it was a RAW release by SaiyaMan (who can you believe is still going strong), and then later subtitled by the two great groups that we had back then Baka-San and ANBU-Aone. I know, we actually had to CHOOSE which subtitled version to download from AnimeSuki, how archaic is that? Both groups had dedicated fans... and I would always get in trouble for posting one over the other... so eventually came around to posting both (you're welcome!). The post received just over 100 comments from some of our very early and great members, of which we managed to amass nearly 10,000 of in our first few months. Over the next one year until August 29th 2004 we promptly posted about 51 episodes, all the way up to episode 98 entitled: Quit Being a Ninja! Tsunade's Notice.
As far as the manga goes, the very first chapter that we had posted up for a direct HTTP download (yes, I've been typing that over and over for 5 years, too!) was the 184th chapter from the series entitled: Sound vs. Leaf!! - and back in those days the manga wouldn't come out until Sunday, sometimes even MONDAY! It seems hard to believe now, considering we get everything so nice and early, usually on Thursday evenings. But, the nice thing is we would usually get multiple RAWS released, all in pretty good quality... and of course, nowadays, we probably don't see any RAWS until after the scanlated version is complete... but, as always, you and I have learned to persevere and adapt. We were incredibly fortunate to have at least a dozen groups scanlate the manga for us back then, most notably Inane, who was there for us every week with super HQ releases. We would get all the way up in to the 230's that year, some of the most exciting times for the Naruto anime and manga.
Other than that, some other pretty big things happened between August 29th 2003 and August 29th 2004, the massively successful game Naruto: Ultimate Ninja was released on October 23rd, the first game in the series which now boasts 7 sequels all across various platforms, culminating with the latest game for the Playstation 3, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm. Naruto also was shown on the big screen for the very first time with the release of the first Naruto movie on August 21st, 2004. The series remained unlicensed throughout the year, despite rumours to the contrary (that we actually covered... yikes) that it was licensed by 4Kids, and effective immediately Naruto would be known as Bobby, and Sasuke as Timmy. On behalf of all Naruto fans, thank you VIZ Media for eventually winning the licensing battle!

Phew! With nothing coming from the Japanese Naruto manga series last week, it has been quite awhile since we have seen anything remotely entertaining... unless you like watching the Olympics, but, that just can't have the same type of drama as 23 minutes of Naruto anime, or 19 pages of Naruto manga, can it? Worry no longer, as the 72nd episode from the Japanese Naruto: Shippuuden anime series has been released completely translated in to English via the usage of subtitles by Dattebayo.
