Chapter 045: The Second Test Volume 5 of the NARUTO series is about Naruto, his friends, and his enemies all competing for the rank of Chuunin in the Chuunin exams. The volume starts with Naruto and company learning of these exams and their instructor entering them in it. Their initial reaction is positive, though Sakura soon begins to feel inferior and unwilling. Night soon comes, and they part ways. On his way home Naruto encounters some new enemies from Wind Country, namely the Hidden Village of Sand. Any further conflict is then ended by Sasuke hitting the threatening ninja on the hand with a rock, and the intervention of the Sand Ninjas' strange younger brother, Gaara. After some soul searching and training, Naruto and company decide to participate in the exam, and are confronted by two chuunins trying to trick them. They easily see through this trick and proceed to the first stage of the exam, only to be interrupted by Rock Lee, challenging Sasuke to a fight. Naruto becomes fed up with all the obsession over Sasuke, and charges at Lee; only to be taken down seconds later by a swift leg sweep from the young martial artist. Lee and Sasuke fight, and Lee shows off his extreme skills. Before he can unveil his signature move, he is stopped by a turtle, and his master Gai. The team then proceeds to the first test. Upon entering they discover a large crowd of mysterious ninjas from all over the world. After a long wait, the test finally begins; much to Naruto's despair, they learn that it is entirely written, composed of 9 extremely difficult questions and 1 that will be revealed later. After a lot of stress, most of the ninjas in the room realize that the point of the test is to cheat without getting caught, so they proceed to do so successfully. Except for Naruto and a few other less intellegent people. Naruto gets through the test with a blank paper, and decides to take the tenth question at the risk of losing any chance of becoming Hokage, or any higher-up ninja rank. Fortunately, the goal of the test was to test courage. Naruto decided to take the question, and passed due to that fact. At this point the next examiner, Mitarashi Anko jumps in through the window and takes them to the new location, a place called the Forest of Death and explains the rules and guidelines for the second test. After meeting some mysterious and creepy ninjas, the exam starts, and the volume ends. |
